On the day my office door opened, my manager asked me to leave and said he would come back tomorrow morning.
He was trying to get me to do something I wasn’t allowed to do: leave my desk.
I couldn’t do it.
So I told him to leave.
He walked out the door and went into the room to change clothes.
He looked at me for a second, looked at my shoes, then left.
That was my first experience of being physically assaulted by a coworker.
The experience left me with an unsettled and disorientated feeling.
It was a scary moment.
It left me feeling isolated, alone and powerless.
I was so worried that I was about to lose my job.
It made me feel so powerless that I didn’t even feel like I had a choice.
I couldn’t leave the room.
The experience made me wonder if I had any power in the workplace.
And then, I was on a plane and I thought, Wow, that’s an important question.
It’s the question that’s going to determine whether or not I get another job.
The question is: Are you more powerful when you don’t have to put up with a coworking space that’s supposed to be there for you?
I was scared to ask because it’s a very powerful question, but I’m wondering if you’re also more powerful, if that’s something you’re thinking about.
And if so, how do you know if your power is being questioned?
If your coworking is there for the right reason, that is power.
But if your coworker doesn’t care about your needs and doesn’t want to do the right thing, that doesn’t really matter.
I know my work is important.
I’m doing great work.
But it’s not the kind of work that is a source of power.
I know that I’m a very, very good worker.
I love the work that I do.
I feel like my job is really important to me, and I’ve been really lucky to get to work with amazing people.
But my boss doesn’t know that.
He thinks I’m just another employee.
I think that’s the power issue.
There are a lot of people in this country who think that if you can’t be an excellent worker, you’re not a good citizen.
But I think that the answer is more nuanced.
And I think this is something that you’re going to be hearing a lot from women.
I have a friend who works at a company where women have to have a man on their team because they’re not allowed to have another woman on their own team.
And they’re constantly asking, What if we could have more people on our team who are good at what they do?
I mean, it’s pretty obvious that there’s a lot more to the equation than that.
